Abdominal, Renal And Retroperitoneal
An abdominal/retro ultrasound uses reflected sound waves to produce a picture of the organs and other structures in the upper abdomen and kidneys. It might be ordered for various reasons.
What is being visualized?
Organs of the Abdominal region, such as:
- liver
- gallbladder
- spleen
- pancreas
- aorta
- kidneys
- bladder
- blood vessels that lead to the organs
What Is The Procedure?
- Evaluate abdominal pain
- Look for stones in the gallbladder or the kidneys
- Find the cause of abnormal blood tests
- Look for enlargement of any organ
- Look at any changes in the kidneys
- Look for any cysts or masses in the abdominal region
Who Is At Risk?

Individuals With
- High Blood Pressure
- Diabetes
- High Cholesterol
- Smoker/History of Smoking
- History of kidney/gallbladder stones/cysts/masses
- Abnormal liver function

Individuals With The Following Symptoms
- Abdominal pain
- Back pain
- Changes in urinary function
- Changes in bowel movements
- Nausea and vomiting
- Other symptoms not listed above

How To Prepare
- Do not eat or drink for 8 hours before the exam
- One hour before the exam, drink 32 ounces of water
- Do not empty your bladder before exam
- Take all your regular medications with a small sip of water
- If you are diabetic, please take your insulin
